Can you add more than 55 options to dropdown field ?

We are running into limits for a custom field we have created for our CS board. We have added about 55 values to our "Customer" field and "Add Option" is now not available to add more. 

1. Can someone confirm that 55 is the value limit for drodown custom fields?
2. And if Yes, what is the procedure to increase the limit?

Are you using a Next-Gen project? Cause I thought I remembered that was one of the limitations of Next-Gen..

Hi Dirk, yes it is a "Next-Gen" project.

1. Would switching the project type resolve this? What project type should we switch too?
2. And would switching project type mid-way also move all the data and metadata of the project automatically? Is there any potential data loss?
