Is there a smart value that would state whether a comment was sent via the portal? I know {{comment.internal}} will tell you whether the comment is visible to the client, but is there a way to determine whether the comment was sent from within help desk or from the portal?

Only this that I can think of is a script, you would need to write a script to check mail handler and add this script to automation rule.
