I just began working on Jira today, can I just begin on the list projects on my Dash?

Nikkole Bennett June 5, 2019

I got my initial email from my team leader today and I logged on, but I do not know what to do first. Can I just begin on the list of projects, and do they walk me through each step to help me comprehend what I am supposed to do?

I have already tried reading through the User's Guide and clicking through the various tabs available, but none really tell me what I need to know. I am confused.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Nikkole and welcome to the community! What you do next depends on a number of things. For example, if you are an admin maybe your next move is to start setting up projects for others. If you are a user then you will ultimately be working issues (creating and working to closure). You mentioned a qualifying exam but not sure if that is something internal to your company or external. Regardless, I would hope that it provided some basic intro into navigation and general use.

Hi, Jack!

I had a second question too. Once I do start working issues, would I be walked through the process step by step, like in the list of projects and such? Would I just begin to do them right away? Thank you so much for getting to my question.

Not sure what constitutes being walked through for you. The way Jira works  as far as working issues to closure is via a workflow. In the simplest form that is To Do -> In Progress-> Done. So you take the first issue you want to work and transition it from To Do to In Progress and finally Done when you have completed the work. You transition issue by various ways that depend on your version of Jira. Generally it is done via buttons when viewing an issue or by dragging and dropping cards on a board. This is just the basics but IMO it is mostly intuitive and you will quickly pick up the basics just by doing and stumbling around a bit.
