Can the fields be designed to use if/then logic in the customer portal? So for example, a field has two answers, yes or no, I want to be able to have a second field appear if the answer is yes and not appear if the answer is no.

Currently, Jira doesn't have the functionality to show or hide fields based on other fields. We have a feature request suggesting the implementation of this ability:

ok thanks, it would be nice to have a function which is onboard. Again buying a plugin is so annoying. Biut thanks anyway.

There are some Apps that can do it for you - Refined Themes for Service Desk and the Behaviours module of Scriptrunner both allow for conditional fields on the portals.
