Asset Reporting - 1) Why are some attributes not showing and 2)How to group by a date field

I have an asset list and have built some nice reports off it, mainly pie charts, showing me how many of the assets have certain attributes.  

1) Why is it that some attributes do not show as available for me to create a report from ?  For example, Status is one of the attributes, but it doesn't appear on the list of attributes to pull from. 

2) One attribute is create date of the object. I can build a report (bar) showing how many were created on each date, but I want to group the results by mm/yy. Is there a way to do this?
