How to perform regular automated backups of a JIRA OnDemand instance?

As it happens there's no built-in way to do this in OnDemand, and users cannot setup Services as that's part of the Restricted Functions in Ondemand.

There is an way to perform this using external scripts, but that's unsupported. For an example of such scripts check this KB article here: Automatic backups for JIRA OnDemand
