I created a user picker cf to designate the QA resource for a ticket. The field is NOT required in my field configurations. But when I attempted to clear this field after a user had been selected, the field did not allow a null value. It returned the deleted value to the field. In a related issue, when I tried to to a bulk change to migrate multiple tickets from one issue type to another, the wizard wanted to require me to set a user for this field as though it is required. I cannot find any reason for this behavior in any of my configurations.
Hi,
Unintentionaly I found a workaround:
Write a user that does not exist. Jira will return an error message.
After that I can delete the field.
Hello @ERP AM/Support
Thanks for your answer. That's the exact workaround provided in the bug reported, so I'm glad to know you managed to implement it.
Have a nice day!

Hello Jennifer,
Sorry to hear you are facing this problem.
Indeed, when removing a user picker content using the backspace key, it does not work as intended. We have a bug reported about this behavior:
- Custom user picker field changes are not updated under specific conditions
Feel free to vote and watch the bug to receive notifications about any updates. For now, Can you check if the workaround provided in the bug works for you?
About the bulk operation, can you please provide us a screenshot displaying the error returned during the bulk operation? Also, can you please check if you don't have any other fields with the same name that might be configured as required in your JIRA Application?
Let us know if you have any questions.
