Connect JIRA Service Desk and JIRA Software running on two different hosts ?

Did somebody tried (no theory, please) to connect

• JIRA Service Desk (JSD)
• JIRA Software (JSW)

running on two different host with own databases and own UserIDs?

Or how can I connect the new standalone JSD and standalone JSW if they run on two different hosts?

Do we need to use the application link feature?

Are there any limitations in this scenario (compared to run JIRA Software and JIRA Service Desk within one JIRA instance)?

Well, you can link them, but there's not a lot you get from the integration.  Both systems have their own projects, users, fields, configurations etc.  So the question becomes "what would you want such a link to do?"
