Custom Field to Test if project was submitted on time

I want to have JIRA, upon a transition, check if a project was moved into a status before the due date. Then I want it to print either a "YES" or "NO" in a custom field entitled "On time?"

My best guess is to do this through a Post Function, but I am struggling with Groovy Logic. Is there a way to do this with no plug ins?
