Customfield to connect to external db

Hi,

I am new to this and have a question that can I have a multi-select customfield on create issue screen whose value is populated from the different(external) DB. Should I develop a customfield plugin or can be done using script runner. Plz help me to find a solution.

I have used nFeed (https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/23337/nfeed-external-data-in-custom-fields?hosting=server&tab=overview) for single select list. Please have a look at this plugin also not sure if that supports multi-select though. But worth checking.
