How can I update properties on a RequestTypeField?

Is there a way to update (via the server API, peferably not REST) a RequestTypeField? I get to the point where I can get them for a RequestType via requestTypeFields() on its CustomerRequestCreateMeta, but not sure how to update any properties, e.g. description.

I'm looking into how to acheive this via the Java API, preferably, rather than REST as I am doing this inside ScriptRunner For JIRA.
