Currently when we change a ticket in Service Management to In Progress, it automatically adds the ticket to the backlog of our Scrum + Kanban board. Is there anyway to disable this? We like to keep our service management tickets separate from the internal work required for them so we link the tickets in Service Management to a different internal board instead. This automation means that we have duplicates that exist in the backlog until the ticket is marked as Done.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Two things you need to understand about boards before I try to answer

  • Boards are a view of a selection of issues, they are not containers for issues
  • Boards (can) have a backlog.  The backlog is actually the same thing as the board - it's a selection of issues.  It's better to think of the board and the backlog as two different views of the same data-set, with different sub-selections.

Hopefully, that makes it pretty clear what the answer is - change the board's selection so that it does not include your JSM issues.
