Is there a different installer for Jira Server and Jira Data Center ?

Andrian F May 3, 2021

Hello,

Looking to move from Jira Server to Data Center. Planning to have a single node Data Center setup. My understanding is that we only have to update the Jira Software / Jira Service Desk and plugin licenses to Data Center for this.

Is there a different installer for Data Center other than Jira Server ?

If we need to do upgrade from our current version to the latest will we run into issues because we just simply changed license from a Jira Server installation ?

Thanks in advance.

Not any more, hasn't been for a long time.  The software is the same, the different licences are what matter for getting the functions that DC does over and above Server.

Until recently, if you wanted to convert a Server to DC (or vice versa), you had to get the new licences and mess around with some config files and directory structures.  Now all you need to do is swap the licences.  A server will behave like a single node DC as soon as the licences for Core, Software and or Service Management are swapped to DC.  (You still need to mess with config to add more nodes, but you can make a Jira server into a DC with just the licences)

You will not have any issues swapping from server to DC.  If you go back, you may have some if you use DC functions that server does not have (archiving for example - you'll not lose the archived projects, but you won't be able to see them on server, at least the last time I looked at it)
