Is there a way to make a "not searchable" custom field searchable?

we're using Jira 4.2.4 and we have a custom field that was created as "not searchable" and we actually need to search for it.

Add a searcher to it. Go to Admin -> Custom fields -> Edit (your custom field), select a searcher, commit the change and re-index Jira to add the data to the index.

If none are available in the drop-down list, then the author didn't tie any searchers into the field code. You'll need to get a new version of the plugin that provides the custom field and includes one or more searchers.
