JIRA Server to JIRA Cloud with an expired license

What approaches are viable to get an outdated and expired JIRA instance migrated to the cloud?

Is it required to simply buy or renew a server license just to get current in order to migrate to the cloud?

Can the new cloud license be used to get the data exported from the old JIRA version into shape for import into the cloud?

Can the server be "upgraded" to the current version with a trial license and then exported/imported to JIRA cloud?

Are there any other options that would not breach supportability?

Migrating from JIRA Server to JIRA Cloud mentions: "We recommend being on the latest release of JIRA Server when importing to JIRA Cloud to avoid any problems with the importing of the XML backup."

You can apply an evaluation license to the server instance while you upgrade. You can get the evaluation license at https://my.atlassian.com.
