Project categories: where is Jira using this information?

we renamed Project Categories and realized that the project boards were broken afterwards.

Where/What for does Jira use Project Categories? Are there any (other) dependencies? I thought it is just for grouping projects.

Search and the project listings are the only places Jira uses the category.  So it should be just your filters you need to update.

You can use categories (category = "category1") in JQL queries. I guess your boards use such JQL queries
