Hi, I'd like to be able to create a Jira automation that will apply a template onto an existing jira ticket. I understand I can create a new ticket using a template, but from what I could see, I'm not able to find documentation or the right tool to apply a template onto an existing ticket using automation rules.
Hi @James Phan !
What exactly do you want to transfer from your template to an existing ticket? In most cases, it should be possible to set up an automation that would edit the existing issue field by field.
Another option is to document the required information as a checklist using Smart Checklist for Jira. Then, you can save this checklist as a template and apply it automatically to new or existing issues/work items. It's a workaround, but, actually, you can put quite a lot of information in a checklist - tag collaborators, add links and deadlines, etc. Let me know if you have any questions
As a reminder...when recommending a marketplace vendor product, please ensure you disclose your affiliation to that vendor in your post wording, and not just in your profile name / badge. For more information about this, please see:

Hi @James Phan
Templates are used to help create issues/work items, you can't directly apply a template to an existing work item.
You can, however, write an automation to fix any fields or add values that may be missing due to not using the template.

Hello @James Phan could you please describe your use case in a bit more detail? Which aspects of the existing issue would you like to define or modify using a template that could be applied? Thanks!

Hi @James Phan ,
What values and fields do you need to fill in with your template for a Jira ticket?
If it's Summary and/Description or other fields as well? Do you need child tasks to be created within that Jira ticket from a template?
If you need a straightforward solution to have Definition of Done, Acceptance Criteria, checklists or other content added to the Issue Description, to try our free app Easy Action Items - Checklist Templates and Automation
You can automate action item templates with triggers such as issue creation or updates, along with conditions like labels or issue types.
Also, you may benefit from our Easy Templates app which will support Automation integration very soon, or check other marketplace apps.
