Custom field only visible to certain group of people to edit

is it possible to set a Custom field that only allow certan group of user to edit at the same time, the field is also a security level field. Appreciate your advice.

This is a limitation in JIRA which has been raised here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-1330 and it has been set as 'Won't Fix'.
