We have Jira Service desk in data center, and planning to add Jira software, what is the best practice? either to buy jira s/w data center or a stand alone server? each being different, will integrating both cause any problems?
Hi,
I am not on the Jira team, but I will try to help.
The main difference between Server and Data Center is whether you are running a single node of Jira vs. multiple nodes. There are many reasons why you might choose to run Server vs. Data Center. This blog post is a great guide to how to think about this question: https://www.atlassian.com/blog/jira-software/server-vs-data-center-whats-right
Here is a feature comparison: https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/jira-server-and-data-center-feature-comparison-953651628.html
If you already have Jira Service Desk running in Data Center, you could add Jira Software to each of the nodes. You will need to ensure you follow the installation steps, but there shouldn't be any issue running Jira Service Desk and Jira Software Data Center on the same nodes.
I hope that helps!
@Marty when you say this "you could add Jira Software to each of the nodes." are you referring to stand alone edition of jira? in that case we generally get one main lic and can generate 'n' no of dev lic, how to manage this?
if you are referring to DC edition of jira, i guess we can repeat using single license in all nodes, correct me if am wrong.

Hi,
I am not an expert on licensing, here is the page on licensing: https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/data-center
If you have Jira Service Desk Data Center, how did you buy that license?

Hi @KRC ,
I think it depends.
You probably choose DC Edition of Jira Service Desk for some reason.
If this reasons are important for Jira Software, you should use DC for Software also.
If not, you might take the decision in regards to the integration.
If you want to integrate Software and Service Desk, it is a lot easier if it is in the same instance. You can integrate different instances, but it is not as smooth as if it is in one instance.

@Bastian Stehmann Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I have a followup question(could be dumb),
lets say, we opted to buy Jira s/w DC edition, in what fashion should integration be done, is it the same way of uploading the add-on from applications? and/or placing add-on in the add-on folder in the backend and reindex?

If i remember correct, it should be the same like on server, just go to the application settings tab in the administration area and there you should be able to add Jira Software to your instance.
