Disable buttons/links on Customer portal

Hello,

is there a way how to disable (without the need of any plugin) buttons or links on the Customer portal page?

Specially the "Help center" button?

We found it can be done with Ultimate theming, but we're looking for a free alternative.

Has anyone came across similar problems?

You can disable the link for certain user groups, so that they can't see other portals.
