I'm looking to auto-assign tickets based on issue type in our Service Desk. Is this possible?
Yes I would also recommend going with Automation for Jira as said by @Italo Qualisoni [e-Core]

I would recommend you to use Automation for JIRA (this app has been acquired by Atlassian and it's built-in now in Cloud).
You can create an automation by going in your Project Settings -> Project Automation(in the left area)
