Jira data migration - Trial license to new server with paid license

Anne C October 23, 2018

Hi,

I would like to know the strategy in migrating Jira data from:

Jira server with trial license  to new server with purchased license

Background:

My company is currently testing Jira so we're using a trial license and Jira is running on a testing server.

We would like to migrate all the data to a new location  - > new server with the purchased license.

Moreover, our instance uses internal directory. While we plan to integrate to LDAP.

1. Is it possible? Since trial license has in-built database and paid license need separate database.

2. Best strategy?

3. How to ensure users are mapped from internal directory to LDAP. Given that account names and emails are correct.

4. Risks to consider.

Thank you!

From my point of view,

  1. About the database , you can choose PostgreSql which is free and recommended also from community (It is what Atlassian using). So then you can just import the in-built "xxx.sql" to the new one!
  2. Read the Documentation and the a fresh install of the latest Jira product to the server.
  3. Here is a link that could help you about the users migrarion: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver072/migrating-users-between-user-directories-828787700.html
  4. I think you could be safe if you have a backup of your database and follow the docs.

Best regards

CM

PS: If a more expertised Administrator see the post i would like to correct me to the points i was wrong! I would appreciate that :)

Nope, that's mostly right.  Just missing a pointer to https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/switching-databases-938846867.html in point 1 I think.

Point 4 is spot on - always take a backup!  But the xml you'll export in order to migrate the database is a backup!

It's one of a standard bookmark - I know the migration process by heart, but I still use it as a checklist (and for answers here, of course.  There's often quirks in migration, but if someone is following the guide in this doc, they cannot be far from the right path!)
