Asset import problem

Denis September 20, 2024

Hello!

I've decided to test importing data into Asset. And I failed.

I've done next:

1. Created two Object types: VM and DB

2. Created csv file with only two lines:

Object Type,Name,Host name,IP address

DB,DB1,db1.example.com,192.168.1.1

VM,VM1,vm1.example.com,192.168.1.10

3. Next: Object schema - Configure - Import - Create Import configuration - CSV import.

4. Added Name, uploaded file and select 'File' in the 'Import from' field.

5. Set 'Synchronizing account' and saved this configuration.

6. Closed 'Create structure or Import configuration?' window.

7. Clicked on my configuration and clicked on 'Create object type mapping'.

8. Chose 'DB' in 'Object Type' and saved this configuration.

9. This configuration is invalid, so I clicked on it and saw 'The data locator is required.'. Ok.

10. Chose 'Name' in the 'Data Locator' field and clicked 'Add'.

11. The same way added 'Host name' and 'Host name'.

12. Repeated steps 7-11 for 'VM' object type.

13. Saved and enabled configuration.

14. Ran it and... got DB1 and VM1 in the 'DB' object type and and theirs in the 'VM' object type.

What I've done wrong?

How to properly import assets into their Object types?

Hi @Denis , welcome to the Atlassian Community and thanks for your question.

I would normally recommend, for any kind of import, to start with an export.

So, I would configure the attributes in Assets, export the csv and then fill in, as you said, a couple of rows and try to import that instead.

Please share your feedback if you have more questions and all the best.

Cheers

Thank you for your advise!

I exported my test structure and... nothing useful - the same flat list with no bound to the structure.
