Migrate Jira home directory from Linux to Windows

Software N3B July 9, 2020

We are testing a migration from Linux to Windows and are at the point where we need to migrate the home directory contents.

Do we simply override all home directory content on the new server with the content from the old server?

Or, do is there a more detailed approach?

I strongly suggest you take a JIRA backup, install JIRA on the windows server, update the the configuration to point the database you want to use and import the backup. then move the attachments to the new location if there is one. The windows install will setup JIRA as a service, which is what you want.

Yes, that is what we've done and it is complete.

The question is:

What contents are you talking about? Are you keeping the attachments there? I don't use service desk so there may be things I'm not familiar with. I've always used a separate server for the database and attachments. I've move several times and never had to get anything from the home directory.

Specifically the data directory. Attachments, caches, plugins, etc.

You need to reinstall the plugins BEFORE you start using it. Move the attachments to where the windows setup says they belong. After you imported the backup anything related to the data directory should be rebuilt. caches will need to be rebuilt on the new server. After you have it up and running logon and verify everything is there. As I said, I've done this several times and never moved anything except the attachments in imported the backup after I installed the plugins.

Reinstall plugins via the admin? Or copy from old server?

Attachments have been moved.

Understood on the rest. Thank you.

Reinstall from scratch. You are moving to a new OS, they may not work and if they did, during the install process they may modify the source code. Pretend the server was destroyed and you only have the JIRA backup and attachment file.
