We are evaluating insight and we were going to install it in the Jira server but in the documentations says they do not recomend installing the discovery tool in the same server as jira and Insight.
Why? Where should it be installed?
Regards
Hi @laralg.
Insight Discovery is comprised of a few components, as you noted:
1. the Insight Discovery Jira Addon, which is basically an Insight Import Module, allowing Insight to import Discovery Scan Results into Insight / Jira.
The Addon should be installed as a Jira Addon, after you've installed Insight itself.
2. The Discovery Tool, which is the actual Network Scanner, is a Zipped package which is downloable through the Discovery Addon in Jira.
3. Inside of the "Discovery_x.x.x.zip" you can find the "Discovery_Agent_Setup.msi" Installer package, as well as the Discovery Collector Setup tool.
When running, the Discovery Tool Network scanner will consume resources available on the machine it is running from, so if you run it from the same machine running Jira Server, you may experience slow performance in Jira (depending on the number of hosts to scan, configurations, and available resources) so we do not recommend to run the Discovery Tool Scan from the same machine running the Jira Server.
Where to run it from? well, any Windows / Linux machine with access to the subnets you are scanning. You can configure the File Transfer attributes so that the Scan Results (Zipped XML) will be transferred to your Insight Import Folder, so they can be imported into Insight using the Discovery Import Module.
For evaluation purposes, on a small Test Instance with a small Network to scan, the Discovery tool may run without significantly affect Jira, but on Production environments, where Performance is of importance, do run Discovery Scans from a separate machine.
Kind regards,

Hi @laralg
I don't know where you have seen that you need to install it on another server. I could find following paragraph on their documentation.
Insight is an add-on to JIRA so you need to make sure JIRA is configured to handle the amount of data you plan to import into Insight. We recommend you to read this article from Atlassian about how to setup JIRA and recommended hardware requirements.
So you just have to install it as any other plugin.

Hi Dave,
This is the parragraf I was talking about, intalling insight as an add-on practiacally does nothing, the importatn part is setting up the discovery part in the server, that what I was asking..
