max limit char in custom field

is there a way to determinate the limit of max chars in a custom field of a form? How can I do this?

If you're looking to set a maximum character limit on a form field in Jira Software native forms doest support this kind of input in forms. 

However, if you're open to using an Atlassian Marketplace add-on, Smart Forms for Jira offers exactly what you need.

✅ With Smart Forms, you can:

• Set a max character limit (and min, too) on almost any form field (e.g. text input, paragraph field)

• Show custom validation error messages when a user exceeds the limit

The maximum characters I'm a short field is 255, and paragraph (multi-line) is about 30,000.

The max limits are pretty hard and fast. You can set character limits in forms that you make though. 

Any time you use one of the mentioned fields in a form, the panel on the right allows you to select minimum and maximum character limits for that field.
