Renaming Groups in Atlassian Admin

Hello! I know that Renaming Groups is currently a Beta feature, but I am curious if anyone has experience doing this, or if you have run into any issues when you've renamed a Group. 

We had changed our Site name a few months ago, but the Group names were not updated to reflect the new Site name. I'd like to fix this by renaming the Groups myself, but am weary of using a "Beta" feature that might break things for our users.

I’ve used the group renaming feature a few times before. The groups were renamed correctly, and the changes were reflected in all related schemes and automations (where I searched, if user is in group). That said, it was a while back, and nothing went wrong at the time.

But you're absolutely right — since it's still in Beta, it's hard to predict how it might behave if the group is heavily used across the instance, especially in JQLs, automations, and other configurations.

My suggestion: try renaming one group first, then wait a bit to see if any issues come up. If everything looks good, you can proceed with renaming the others.

Renaming groups in Atlassian, even though it's a beta feature, is generally safe. The permissions tied to the group usually remain unaffected because Atlassian uses an internal ID rather than just the group name.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

• If the group name is used in external systems like SSO, automation rules, or scripts, you'll need to update those references manually.
• In some cases, the updated name might take a little time to appear across all areas of the UI.
• There's no simple way to undo a rename, so it's best to proceed with caution.
