Is it possible to add additional user attributes from external database?

We currently utilize LDAP read-only users.  (we are using JIRA server)  We have additional attributes we receive from our HR system that are not in AD.  I'm wondering what the recommended solution to get these added as a user attribute somehow would be?

We installed the Communardo addon to get additional AD attributes (and the fact that I have to even purchase this add-on to get a field like manager name from AD annoys me, but that's besides the point), but this addon seems fairly AD focused.
