We have Assets as part of our JSM implementation.
For the life of me, I can't see how to associate an asset to an incident.
I did find this link :
You must have an asset management app installed to link an asset.
To link an asset to the field:
Go to the issue view of an issue.
Under Linked assets in the sidebar, select + Link asset.
Search for assets.
Select the asset you want to link.
If you do not see any search results:
Check your app is set up correctly by referring to its setup guide.
Make sure you have assets in your asset management system.
but it says I need an asset app installed. Which then wants me to store my assets there.
If I am using JSM Assets, do I really need to install a 3rd party app and replicate my data?
The KB you found is a bit generic and applies to both Assets and apps from the Marketplace. In your case all you have to do is create a new custom field that is of the type Assets object. Once you have configured that field and added it to the issue layout you will be able to link the asset, either manually or via automation.
