Can I set automations to copy comments from Epics in one project to another?

Mariel Baluja May 2, 2025

Hi!

I am a project manager supporting cross-functional teams in my organization. Part of our process is to clone work items, in this case Epics, from the source Jira project board(s) into our own PMO project.

One example: we partner with the Product team to intake large lift requests, some of which will require collaboration amongst both groups. The intakes come in through an Intake board managed by Product and my PMO board is in a separate Jira project, managed by PMO.

Can I set automations to copy comments when I clone entries from the Intake board (source) into my PMO board (destination)?

Thanks!

Hi @Mariel Baluja

Yes, it is possible to have automation copy comments to a new work item. Here's an article that gives you an exemple.

Hope I was able to help.

Kind regards,

Ana

Hi @Mariel Baluja

As an alternative to Automation that can be really complex to implement sometimes, I can suggest trying our app Elements Copy & Sync to clone comments across Jira projects.

More than that, you can also synchronize the work items together if needed so that if someone comments the source work item, the comments also appear in the cloned one. Synchronization can be either one or two-ways.

You can read more about the feature here.

Hi @Mariel Baluja

Jira Automation doesn’t copy comments across projects without additional setup, but our app Deep Clone for Jira does it comfortably. Here's how:

  1. Open the Epic > Actions menu ··· > Deep Clone > Epic Clone.
  2. Pick your PMO project as the target.
  3. Tick Comments (plus any other data you need) and create the clone.

Why it helps

  • Comment authors and timestamps are preserved.
  • You can include attachments, status, links, watchers, and more in the same step.

Hi Luka, I did this but the only comments that came through are historical comments, not the new ones that have been added since. Did I miss a step?

Hi @Mariel Baluja

Deep Clone for Jira should clone all comments. If you are encountering problems and not all comments are cloned as expected, please contact our support here.
