Hi folks!
I hope this isn't a really stupid question, but since I'm not a Jira admin for my organization I can't check myself. Is it possible to create a business project if your company only subscribes to Jira Service Management? Atlassian's documentation says that JSM users can "access" business projects, and the threads I found from around the time that JSW and JWM merged included Atlassian employees swearing that JSM subscribers would keep their access to the JWM functions. That was over a year ago, however, and before I upset my IT people by asking for a Business Project, I figured I'd check here.
Thank you for any info you all might have!
Hi @Sarah S Allis am I correct in understanding your company currently only uses JSM (so no Jira software or business projects), but you would like to create the first Jira business project?
If that is the case, your company will most likely need to purchase Jira in order to start creating Jira projects (they can be software or business).
My understanding of the phrasing from when JWM became Jira business projects is that if a company used both Jira and JSM before the end of JWM, and some of their Jira projects were JWM that would be come Jira business projects, JSM users (unclear if this means agents only, or also customers) would still be able to access the projects.
This would not apply to creating brand new projects.
Hi Laura, your understanding is correct that we have JSM only. I have to say that this is pretty frustrating to hear considering that I came across multiple posts from Atlassian employees telling JSM subscribers that they wouldn't lose access to the JWM functionality. It's really a shame that Atlassian's documentation is unclear!
But thank you for your answer. I appreciate it!

JSM and Jira are still different products, meaning if one user has the JSM customer license they will only be able to access the portal and that's it. They would need a Jira license to access the business projects.

I appreciate you answering! I do want to confirm, because I found this documentation from Atlassian that says: “Users on a Jira Service Management subscription will still be able to access business projects, but not software projects. There are no plans to change this at this time.” on this page: https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/jira-work-management#jira-work-management
You're saying that this is not the case and Atlassian's documentation there is incorrect?

Personally, it doesn't make sense to have the JSM users to be able to access the business projects. First, these are different products, and even if this was correct, it doesn't confirm that the users will be able to access all the business projects because they have Browse Projects permission.

What you say does make sense, but I have to admit, I was hoping for a more definitive answer! Still, thank you for the additional information!

No problem! Kindly accept the answer so others can refer to it. Thanks!

Well, considering I'm getting conflicting information between you and Atlassian's own documentation, I hope you don't mind if I wait to see if anyone else can answer me for sure that it's not possible. Unless you can confirm it doesn't work?
