We have a lot of Epic items with child issues that are not necessarily subtasks. Usually Story and/or Task.
An administrator recently archived an Epic, and the Story and Task tickets, all of which are in Canceled status, were left behind. They have no indicator that they were archived, and they have an Archive option in the menu.
Is this behavior expected? If yes, is there any way to automatically archive child issues when the Epic is archived?
Based on my understanding that it is expected. When archiving an Epic issues, only the Epic issues are archived. All child issues are not touched. It is different with issue with sub-tasks children where the sub-tasks will be archived when its parent issues are archived.
Take a look at the following enhancement issue request - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-93361 and add yourself as a watcher to be updated when Atlassian Development Team address this ask.
Sorry.
