I expect you are trying to create issues via the API.

Issue Type is a system field, so it doesn't use the customfield_<number> convention in the API.

Issue Type needs to be specified by the ID of the issue type.

Example:

"issuetype": { "id": "10000" }, see API documentation here to create an issue.
