JSM Cloud to Confluence Data Center for Knowledge Management

We are getting ready for our go-live of JSM Cloud and will be leveraging Confluence Data Center for our Knowledge Management.  We have the Application Tunnel and links setup.

Does anyone have insight to the architecture of how/when JSM initiates a request to Confluence? 

I want to make sure that we understand the potential impact of having JSM use our Confluence Data Center instance will have on resources. 

• Does JSM manage an index of Confluence or does JSM utilize the index of the Confluence Space?
• If JSM performs its own index, how often is that done?
• Are these being done through an API call to our Confluence Data Center?
• When searching knowledge through portal, how are real-time updates of search results being performed when using Confluence Data Center?

So many questions, so little time.
