We are starting to explore using some of the apps in the Marketplace, but I'm not sure about the licensing with them when dealing with a sandbox environment.

We have a production and sandbox set up with both Jira Software and Jira Service Management. If I license an app on my production system, do I also have the ability to install it in my sandbox? Or is that a separate cost? Or, to complicate it even further, is this something that's different from app to app?

What's your process for bringing a new app into your Jira environment?

Here is what I found on this topic - manage-product-sandboxes the pertinent info is below.

Add Marketplace and Atlassian apps to a sandbox

You can install apps from the Atlassian Marketplace or through the Manage apps screen from within your Jira or Confluence administration section of your sandbox. All apps are available on a free 30-day trial.

We’ll send you email notifications about your trial period ending. After the 30-day trial, you’ll need to add your payment details to purchase a subscription to keep using the app in your sandbox. Subscriptions for apps in your sandbox are available monthly, and the price for apps is calculated on the number of users with access to your sandbox, not your production environment. Currently, we don’t support annual subscriptions for apps in a sandbox.

All apps and app subscriptions are deleted when your sandbox is deleted.

For more details on apps, see Marketplace apps, Managing Confluence apps, and Managing Jira apps.

Thank you for the information. I also heard back from a couple of the vendors on the marketplace, and they verified that their products require a separate license to have the app in a sandbox. That seems odd to me, that you have to pay double the cost just to have the app available in your test environment. We'll probably work without a safety net with some of these apps.

For reference for anyone who finds this question as I did.
The documentation for Sandboxes now states that if the linked Production environment has a paid license for an App, the App in the Sandbox should remain free after the trial period.

I recommend contacting Atlassian Support if that is not the case for you.
