Is it possible to lessen or remove the description in the portal group and use only the Title?

Another option you may want to consider is to create more than one portal groups for your "IT Portal" existing group by associate request forms to other portal groups.  This way, the group description will be reduced.

I agreed with what @Alex Koxaras -Relational- stated and you should add yourself as watcher of the outstanding enhancement ticket with Atlassian.
