I'm wanting to send customers and invite email to sign up and join the customer facing service management portal.
When I go to [Project Settings > People > Add] I type in their email and then select 'service desk customer' as the user type, but nothing happens.
There is no email sent, no pending account into the people list, nothing seems to happen!

When adding a customer you do this under the customers screen. You also need to ensure that you have the customer invite notification enabled under project settings > customer notifications.
@Jack Howard have you tried adding those users using user management first?
