Checklist Automation without third party apps?

I'm looking for a way to apply a checklist to an onboarding automation.

Currently, I'm using the free version of Issue Checklist and it works but I need a way to do this without paying for an app. Is this possible?

You should check in the marketplace for free ones.  But the ones that you pay for are worth it since they integrate well with jira automations to add specific checklist for request types.  We use smart checklist pro.  

If you want discounts on plugins, you should talk to Atlassian Solution Partners and they can help with some discounts.

The best way is to get a paid app, probably Smart Checklist Pro, it has a lot of automation options.
