I'm getting ready to deploy the Customer Portal into my internal helpdesk operation. It looks pretty basic now, but that's fine.
I can't see the name of my requests. It looks like the request name is in perfect white and the bottom pane is some shade of gray. Very hard to read as is. Any ideas on how I can change this or that background color? I have a feeling atlassian didn't design it this way, so where did I go wrong?

Are you seeing a 'Customize' link on the right side of your portal? That should let you change the colors.
