Function Due Date "Set to recur"

Fabian_pallestrong May 6, 2025

Hello,

Recently, I found a new function in the Due Date field.

What are some real-life examples of using the Due Date "Set to recur"?

I can't find any documentation about this feature online.

Hi @Fabian_pallestrong,

This is a recent feature:

It works by creating an automation rule that will clone the work item at the set frequency.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Manon. Do you also know what's the difference between When scheduled and When Completed?

How can we configure that only Admins can use this function?

Hi @Fabian_pallestrong,

I agree the UI could be clearer! Here's what I understand:

  • When scheduled: the work item will recur at the set schedule, regardless of its status and whether it’s been completed.
  • When completed: the work item will only recur after it reaches a green status (meaning, it’s done/completed)

Technically, "when completed" adds "AND statusCategory = Done" to the automation trigger's JQL filter.

I assume it's made for different use cases:

  • When scheduled: useful for tasks that must happen on a strict schedule, even if the previous one wasn’t finished.
  • When completed: when you want to avoid duplicates and only repeat the task once the current one is done.

You can disable non-admins access in the Jira settings > Global automation > ••• (top right) > Global configuration:

Hei,

Why there is no monthly or yearly option?image.png

You can create the rule and then change the occurrence in the automation rule.

Hi Fabian,

The rule is currently read-only, so I’m unable to edit it. Is there an easier way to add more recurrence options - such as “Monthly” or “Every 3 months” - to the Set to recur pop-up?

Hi, you can edit it if you go to System -> Settings -> Global Automation.

From there you can set the recurrence as you wish.
