The built-in options for customizing are very limited.

Surely there must be a way to add custom CSS without using an app? 

Would appreciate any ideas.

Hi

Atlassian doesn't recommend modifying built-in files insides it's apps because you maybe face upgrading issues in the future. Did you try using some client-side solutions like usersyles.org?
