Can Jira Service Management integrate with BambooHR? If so, to what extent can they integrate? And how can I set it up or where should I start?
Here is an elaborate answer that I categorized by a few personas.
Link to BambooHR API. Bamboo HR offers a robust API including webhooks to capture realtime events. If you have developer skills, and with the help of chatGPT/Claude you can have most of the code in no time. You can pull data and push to Bamboo HR and pretty much any actions supported by the API.

Note: Only consideration is development time and also support of the custom code.
Use of Marketplace Apps.
If you are tasked with implementing HR Service Management then you can focus on having the right request types, workflows validations and not worry about the Bamboo HR APIs. OnRamp has a native connector Bamboo HR right within Jira Service Management. Demo video.
Use cases you can implement using OnRamp.

Use of Middleware
There are lot of middlwares that have connectors to Bamboo HR. If your IT team uses a middleware, you can pretty much build any type of integrations using the Bamboo HR.
Note: Please note both the options involve license cost and development time.
This is a popular requirement from our customers. Having employee data from Bamboo HR to assets enables lot of automations and advantages. I have covered this in detail in a recent blog.
OnLink supports a native data import from Bamboo HR to Assets. Demo video.

What we have seen increasingly is HR Business Partners use JSM to manage service request from employees. They are not technical but have a solid understanding of the business process. They look for config based solutions to establish the integration without any custom coding or middleware.
Pulling Time off Request from Bamboo HR.
This helps Project Managers to manage project assignments based on resource availability.
Push data from JSM to Bamboo HR.
We have seen customers push email changes, asset assignment e.g laptop, mobile to Bamboo HR.
Bottom line, there are multiple approaches - you can pick the one that suits you in terms of your budget, development skills and requirement.
