Getting started with Smart Values (not displaying variables)

Chris Greathead June 19, 2020

Hi,

I'm trying to update linked issues which are 'caused by' a parent 'problem'.

our issues have a custom field which is the resolution (i.e. what steps were taken to resolve it), This custom field is also on our Problem.

The idea is to fill in the resolution on the parent 'problem' which would close and notify all of the child tickets, and would copy the contents of the resolution from the parent problem also.

Using automation this is almost working, I'm adding in essentially a comment at the moment, but my intention is to edit the custom field on the child ticket with {{issue.Resoltion}} (from the parent Problem).

When I do this, (or any example from the smart values list) all I see is the same variable name rapped in double {{ }} (i.e. it's not putting any field content in there.

Am I referencing it wrong?

Thanks

Hi,

you can just use the action 'Edit issue' and then go to ... > copy from

Now you can choose from where you want to copy the resolution.

Hi,

I've seen this referenced before... are you using Service Desk on the cloud? Or are you just in the Jira Software project type?

In Service Desk i do not see that option - infact the whole Automation set is not like that at all.

When i goto Edit Issue I only get asked which Field to update.  Which I have selected - but there isn't a 'copy from' button anywhere.

Thanks

Hi @Chris Greathead, I'm sorry since your have Cloud I assumed you used Automation for Jira.

Jira Service Desk has it's own automation, but you also have Automation for Jira (all Cloud instances have it). It is under another sections in your project settings.

Namely 'Project automation' instead of 'Automation' In the picture below, you are probably using 1 and I'm referring to 2

Hi again,

I don't have that on mine, however I do notice that you are on a classic service desk, we are on the Next - Gen type.. is this feature missing from Next Gen?

Thanks

Ah, go to Project settings > Apps > Project automation

Ah!! thats what I've been missing.

So I now see the options above that you have suggested.

Now, back on to my issue i'm still struggling with... I want to update a parent problem, and have that update copied to the child incident.

But I can't figure out what trigger to use; if i use 'When: Value changes for" then this is from the point of view of the parent problem.

But there is no way to edit the field in the child ticket from here.

Any other trigger types don't work because making the change to the parent problem so they are not seen.

In the old automation there was a type 'Update Jira Linked Issues' "Make sure linked issues are automatically updated when a related issue changes".  This is what i'm trying to copy I guess.

Thanks

Hi, sorry i've just found the 'For Linked Issues' - i'd not spotted that.

Hopefully this is what I need!
