How can I change the default notification rules for both new and existing users?

Using role-based notification rules just overrides this configuration without allowing users to change it later. I want to update how their accounts are initially configured—either when created or as they are today—but still allow them to customize the settings if they want to."

Just to clarify—when you mention “default notification rules,” are you referring to:

  • The personal notification settings users see in their profile (e.g., email alerts, mentions, etc.),
  • The JSM customer/agent notifications configured under Project Settings, or
  • Project-level notification schemes tied to roles?

Understanding this will help tailor the response better, especially since the control available differs across those levels.

Thanks for clarifying with the screenshot and link.
You’re referring to the alert notification rules found under personal profile settings (at /jira/settings/personal/alert-notifications).

At the moment, Jira/JSM does not let admins set or update the default alert notification rules for new or existing users—each user manages these settings themselves from their personal profile. There isn’t a bulk option or admin override that still allows users to customize their notifications later.

The best workaround is to provide users with a guide or template during onboarding so they know how to set up their notification rules.
