You are talking about portal-only customers, right? If yes, then this is an expected behaviour.

When I run a report on a project and I include the reporters name, it pulls in the gibberish and not the proper name. Is that expected behaviour?
When I want to tag the reporter in a comment on the ticket is shows the gibberish however the proper name shows once the comment is sent.
