I need to capture a date of a notification and I want to have it in a visible field.
Can I autofill a date field to today on create by hiding it on the form?
Or is there an automation run on create that will set it?
rather than someone just picking it from the calendar when they create the ticket...

if you create an automation rule with the Create Issue trigger you can edit a date field and use the smart value {{now}} in it. Also see https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/smart-values-date-and-time-functions/.
