I'm looking for a way to disable the creation of customer facing comments for agents when an issue is in a certain status. Adding internal comments should still be possible.
I could not find a workflow property for it. Does anyone have other ideas?

You need to set the property on the Status.
Go into your Workflow > click on the status you require > then click properties.
I'd advised Key: jira.permission.comment.projectrole and then Value appropriate to the Project role you want to allow.
You can find the ProjectRoleID by going to Settings > System > Project Roles > Select edit beside the role you wish to choose and then ID will be shown in URL bar.
Alternatively, you can use a Key: jira.permission.comment.denied.
