Hi Amarjeet,

In Jira, issue types like Bug, Task, Story, and others are categorized based on their purpose and use within project management. These categories help in organizing and distinguishing between different kinds of work items. Here's a breakdown:

1. Bug

  • Category: Defect
  • Description: A Bug is an issue that represents a problem in the system, such as a defect, error, or unexpected behavior in the software. Bugs typically need to be fixed to ensure the software functions correctly.

2. Task

  • Category: Task/Activity
  • Description: A Task is a general work item that needs to be completed. It usually represents a piece of work that isn’t necessarily tied to a story or feature but still needs to be tracked and managed.

3. Story

  • Category: Requirement/User Story
  • Description: A Story is a requirement or feature request described from the end user's perspective. It is typically used in Agile methodologies to define a user need that the team must implement.

Statuses represent the various stages that an issue (such as a Bug, Task, Story, etc.) can go through in its lifecycle. These statuses are part of a workflow and help track the progress of issues from creation to completion. Here’s an overview of common Jira statuses:

Common Jira Statuses

  1. To Do / Open / Backlog

    • Description: The issue has been created but work has not yet started. This is the initial status for most workflows.
    • Use Case: An issue in this status is awaiting prioritization or assignment.
  2. In Progress

    • Description: Work on the issue has begun. Team members are actively working on the task, bug, or story.
    • Use Case: This status indicates that the issue is currently being worked on and is not yet complete.
  3. In Review

    • Description: The work has been completed, and the issue is now under review, typically by a peer or lead, to ensure it meets the required standards.
    • Use Case: Commonly used for code reviews, QA checks, or any approval process.
  4. Done

    • Description: The issue has been completed and is considered finished. No further work is required.
    • Use Case: Once an issue passes all checks and is confirmed to be complete, it moves to this status.

Hope this solve your question.

Welcome to the community @Amarjeet Suryawanshi

Did you mean status category? In Jira, there are 3 status categories: To Do, In Progress, Done. When you are modifying your workflow you can add new STATUSES with their STATUS CATEGORIES. For example: Testing status will have a status category of In Progress.

Epics, stories, bugs, tasks and sub-tasks are the issue types that are default exsiting in Jira when you create a project. You can add your own issue types as well and use them in your projects.
