When to use Service vs Assets object

I have items that are created as an Object in assets.  Jira also has Services which are it's own schema in Assets.  Do I need to recreate my Assets objects as a Service or is it better to just use an Assets custom field? Guess what I am trying to understand is when is it recommended to use Service and why?

The only use case I have found for using Service as opposed to making your own through Assets objects is whether or not you are using Change Management in your ITSM project.  Features such as conflict detection for changes exclusively use Service.
