Automatically transition to previous status on response from customer

We are currently working on a project and looking to automatically transition to the previous status of the workflow on response of the customer. 

The best way I can describe this is that the workflow will transition to a certain team status (e.g. Team A, Team B & Team C). From here dependant on which team it has gone to they will transition into a status of "Awaiting Customer Response". When the customer responds the workflow will then automatically transition into the previous status so it falls back with the correct team dealing with the request.

At the minute I have attempted using SD Automation and Scriptrunner listeners but seem to be missing some fundamental obvious point on previous statuses.
